Plein Air Easton 101

Each July, the Eastern Shore becomes both studio and subject. Fields, waterfronts, quiet streets, and working harbors fill with artists capturing fleeting light and the landscapes that define this place. It's a tradition that has become part of the rhythm of summer in Talbot County.

The practice of plein air painting—French for "open air"—emerged in the 19th century, when artists left their studios to paint directly from nature. Armed with newly portable easels and paint in tubes, painters sought to capture the changing quality of light, atmosphere, and season with immediacy rather than memory. The movement transformed landscape painting, influencing generations of artists from the Barbizon School to the Impressionists, and remains a living tradition for painters who believe the truest understanding of a place begins by standing within it.

From July 10–19, Plein Air Easton celebrates its 22nd year as one of the nation's premier outdoor painting festivals and the largest juried plein air competition in the United States. Produced by the Avalon Foundation, the festival brings together world-class artists, collectors, and thousands of visitors for ten days of painting, exhibitions, demonstrations, and community events that celebrate the enduring connection between art and place.

The festival's central exhibitions are hosted by the Academy Art Museum and Waterfowl Headquarters in the heart of downtown Easton, while artists can be found painting throughout Talbot County—from historic towns and quiet marshes to working farms and Chesapeake waterways. Along the way, local businesses, galleries, volunteers, and residents become part of the experience, welcoming visitors into a community where creativity is woven into everyday life.

Plein Air Easton is made possible through the support of the Talbot Arts Council, generous corporate partners, local businesses, media sponsors, the Friends of Plein Air Easton, and hundreds of volunteers whose commitment helps sustain one of the region's most celebrated cultural traditions. Together, they ensure the festival continues to strengthen the arts, inspire conservation, and contribute to the vitality of Maryland's Eastern Shore.
