Meet the artisans who create these unique, handmade gifts as they demonstrate their crafts. Demonstrations feature mosaics with gallery owner Jennifer Wagner, basket weaving with Heidi Wetzel, crocheted metal jewelry with Annie Hynes, hammered copper sculpture and torch-made glass beads with Sharon Stockley, collage with Karen Maskell-Peck, and bronze sculpture with Larry Bechtel. Silk Scarf Painting Demo with Rebecca Snure

Rebecca Snure learned the French serti method of painting on silk during a stay in Burgundy. It has become her artistic passion, and her inspiration comes from nature, her everyday observations and her surroundings. To make her scarves, wraps, pillows, etc…Rebecca will first draw freehand onto stretched silk, mix dyes and let them fuse with the silk. Then they are set permanently so that her creations can be worn and washed for years to come! Stewart White was the Grand Prize winner of Plein Air-Easton! 2009.  He is a Baltimore artist, working in oil and watercolor and is a sought after painter of murals and public art as well as residential sized paintings. "She follows the light, both here and abroad to produce paintings in an impressionistic style." Resident of Alexandria,Virginia. Edwin Remsberg Workshop, A Photographic View of Agricultural & Working Lands

Edwin Remsberg is a national-award-winning photographer who specializes in documenting agriculture, Maryland’s heritage, and the changing nature of traditional work in a modern economy. In 1987, Life magazine selected his photograph of the Amtrak crash in Chase, Maryland, as one of their “Pictures of the Decade.” An exhibit of his portraits of disabled individuals in the workplace—a project for Goodwill Industries, illustrating the positive effects of rehabilitative employment on self-confidence and pride—is currently traveling the state. Remsberg’s photographs are featured in several books, including Maryland’s Vanishing Lives, Testament to Union: Civil War Monuments in Washington DC, and Dishing Up Maryland: 150 Recipes from the Alleghenies to the Chesapeake Bay. Remsberg will sign copies of his books following the workshop. www.remsberg

 

Carol Lee Thompson, Taken with Talbot County

If you didn’t get your fill of watching painters at work during the week, here’s your chance to get a glimpse of the process of making a plein air painting. Carol Lee Thompson will explain and demonstrate how she works to capture the mood of a local landscape. Thompson is our featured artist for July—stop by Troika Gallery and see her stunning work. Her art covers a wide range of subject matter including still-life, landscape, portraiture, equine, and Native American subjects. A Classical Realist trained in the methods of the Old Masters, Thompson uses only fine Belgian linen and panels she prepares herself, hand grinds her pigments with black oil, and makes her own Flemish Medium. She has competed at Plein Air–Easton! for five years.

Jean Stern “Choosing a Winner” with Judge Jean Stern

Academy Art Museum, 106 South St.

Awards judge, Jean Stern will use his 2010 winning selections to impart what makes a successful plein air painting. This is a prime opportunity for art buyers to see paintings through an expert insider’s eye as Stern discusses how and why he selected the winners. He will also walk patrons through the competition galleries and point out other examples of great plein air paintings throughout the Academy Art Museum.  Mr. Stern is a highly-regarded authority on California Impressionism. He has been executive director of the Irvine Museum in Irvine CA since its inception in 1993. He is a sought-after author, curator, lecturer, and teacher.

Gavin Brooks

**Gavin Brooks Painting Demonstration

Gavin was the Grand Prize winner of Plein Air-Easton, 2005!  She paints in the style of the Post Impressionists. A childhood in the outdoors fueled the memory and imagination that impacts her work today. Tonalist colors are her trademark. She paints often on Maryland's Eastern Shore and in Western Maryland.
